LEBANON (Enmaeya News) – November 14, 2025
Arsal, in the Baalbek District, is facing significant environmental challenges following a period of population displacement. Unregulated sewage disposal and large amounts of debris have caused notable ecological damage in the area.
Local authorities have indicated that addressing the situation is beyond the capacity of municipalities alone, highlighting the need for international technical and financial support to implement comprehensive remediation measures.
The Ministry of Environment has presented a proposal to the Cabinet outlining practical steps to mitigate the impact. Recommended measures include conducting a survey of debris volumes through the National Council for Scientific Research, testing well water and soil quality in coordination with relevant ministries, and developing plans to rehabilitate agricultural land and treat wastewater.
Officials emphasized that collaboration between government agencies, municipalities, and international partners will be crucial to restoring environmental safety and supporting sustainable land use in Arsal and surrounding areas.
