Lebanon (Enmaeya News) – November 19, 2025
Minister of Energy and Water Joe Saddi stated that Lebanon’s electricity production capacity currently ranges between 8 and 10 hours per day, provided sufficient funding is available for fuel and maintenance. He noted that the current production (1,000–1,200 MW) remains far below national demand.
Saddi revealed that 30% of electricity is lost due to illegal consumption, and the ministry has begun implementing measures to improve revenue collection and prosecute major offenders. He emphasized that the electricity company will no longer rely on borrowing after accumulating debts of around $22 billion, potentially reaching $35 billion including accrued interest.
Regarding fuel, Saddi announced that Lebanon will receive two shipments as a grant from Kuwait and two additional shipments at market price, to be paid from the electricity company’s revenues. Efforts are also underway to strengthen electricity interconnections with neighboring countries and expand solar energy use.
On oil and gas, the minister noted that the lack of commercial quantities in some wells does not eliminate opportunities. Block 8 has been referred to a consortium of Total, Qatar Energy, and ENI to begin 3D seismic surveys.
In the dams sector, Suadi revealed that preliminary approvals have been granted to fund technical studies for Bel’aa, Baq’ata, Janna, and Mseilha dams through independent experts, with studies expected to begin early next year.
