Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized today at the Beirut One conference that Lebanon remains a land of opportunity, stressing that the country’s progress relies on maintaining security, stability, and effective reforms.
“Our path to reform has begun, but without safety and security, we risk missing this opportunity for national advancement,” said PM Salam. He highlighted that Lebanon has returned to the Arab world, and the Arab world is beginning to return to Lebanon. “We hope to lift the ban on Lebanese exports, and tomorrow the scanners at Beirut Port will be inaugurated. I am confident that Arabs will come back to Lebanon.”
On economic reform, PM Salam reaffirmed the importance of the IMF agreement, describing it as both a source of funds and a “certificate of good conduct” to attract investment. He stressed that stepping back from the deal is not an option.
Addressing the issue of bank deposits, the Prime Minister clarified: “Not all depositors are equal. There are those with legitimate deposits and those with illegitimate deposits. Anyone whose deposits are illegitimate, resulting from corruption or drug trafficking, should not only have their deposits canceled but should also face imprisonment and accountability.”
PM Salam acknowledged challenges in the electricity sector, including distribution, billing, and production. To address these, he announced plans for public-private partnerships to build two major power plants and develop two renewable energy stations, solar and wind.
He also underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening state authority, restoring public trust, and holding parliamentary elections as scheduled. “Our government is acting seriously and differently,” he said, pointing to renewed confidence from the Arab world, evidenced by the participation of a Saudi delegation at the conference.
“Everyone will receive their deposits within reasonable periods,” the Prime Minister added, “but those tied to corruption or criminal activity must face consequences.”
