LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - November 21, 2025

Lebanon has stepped up security at its major ports with the recent deployment of high‑tech cargo scanners to counter smuggling, LBCI reported.

A $10 million scanner, financed by shipping giant CMA CGM, has arrived at the Port of Beirut and is expected to become fully operational within about five weeks. The system is capable of penetrating up to 40 cm of metal in containers and can detect concealed items such as drugs, money, and other contraband.

A technical team from CMA CGM will operate the scanner, while customs officials continuously monitor its use. The machine features artificial intelligence that helps accurately identify contents and relay information in real time to port authorities.

Officials said a similar scanner has also been delivered to the Port of Tripoli and is expected to begin operations soon.

Lebanon’s Finance Minister, Yassine Jaber, described this deployment as “the first phase of a broader customs overhaul.” He said that subsequent phases will introduce an integrated information system and advanced AI tools for risk analysis, image storage, and cross-border sharing of container scans.

According to the National News Agency, the Cabinet approved the acquisition and installation of these scanners at Beirut and Tripoli ports under pressure to improve customs enforcement, prevent smuggling, and increase state revenues.

By deploying this cutting-edge scanning technology, Lebanon aims not only to clamp down on illicit imports, including drugs and hazardous materials, but also to restore confidence in its ports’ integrity and to modernize customs operations.
