As part of its efforts to strengthen media and information literacy in Lebanon, UNESCO’s Regional Office in Beirut held a special Youth Day at Tyre Public Mixed Secondary School under the theme “From Media to Creativity: Youth Combating Misinformation through Knowledge.

The event was part of the Youth Empowerment Project in the South, funded by UNIFIL and implemented in collaboration with UNESCO and UNICEF. It was attended by the Director of UNESCO Beirut, UNIFIL representatives, and the President of the Tyre Municipalities Union.

The day concluded a comprehensive training program that equipped around 250 young people from southern Lebanon with skills in critical thinking, verifying information, and countering disinformation and hate speech.

Participants included students, content creators, civil society representatives, and youth community groups, who will now share these skills within their schools and communities to create a more informed digital environment.

The program featured TED-style talks from young journalists and content creators, interactive workshops on content creation, AI-based awareness tools, cybersecurity, and public speaking. A session titled “Voices of Change” allowed youth to present initiatives for responsible media use.

The day concluded with the Best Awareness Video Competition, awarding Mahmoud Badran, Maysa Atwi, and Ali Hammoud for their creative projects addressing misinformation and hate speech.

This initiative reflects UNESCO’s ongoing commitment to empowering young generations in Lebanon with media literacy, critical thinking, and the tools to build a more conscious, responsible digital society.
