TikTok has launched a set of new features designed to improve users’ well-being, including an affirmation journal, a background sound generator, and badges to encourage controlled platform use.
The Chinese company has redesigned its screen time management page, adding new features such as an affirmation notebook with over 120 positive reminders that allow users to set daily goals, a sound generator playing calming sounds like rain or ocean waves, and a breathing exercise module.
TikTok also stated that the page will feature content from creators discussing ways to reduce screen time, use parental controls, and personalize posts.
Additionally, TikTok has introduced new badges to reward users, especially teenagers—who use the platform responsibly.
The company explained that it reviewed academic research on safe technology use and mental health, finding that overly restrictive tools can have negative effects on teenagers.
To earn these badges, users must complete various tasks. For example, users can earn a badge by getting the recommended hours of sleep, which involves avoiding platform use at night. They can also earn badges by using the new meditation tools.
TikTok further rewards users who set daily limits on device use in general, and who stay within these limits on the platform, with badges. Other badges are available for reviewing weekly usage reports and inviting others to complete tasks.
The company stated that "during early testing of these features, more people engaged with the new wellness tools compared to the previous version."
TikTok also noted that links to these tools will appear when users access the platform at night or reach the recommended daily maximum device or platform use.
