French authorities have arrested four additional suspects in connection with last month’s daylight robbery of royal jewels worth $102 million from the Louvre Museum in Paris.
According to Al-Jazeera, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the latest arrests involve two men, aged 38 and 39, and two women, aged 31 and 40. All four are from the Paris region.
They join four previously arrested individuals who are already under formal investigation in connection with the heist.
The October 19 robbery targeted the Apollo Gallery, home to the French crown jewels. Thieves used a mover’s lift to reach the second floor, smashed a window, and opened display cases with angle grinders.
Earlier investigations revealed that one of the previously arrested men, 37, was in a relationship with the female suspect, and both had children. DNA evidence linked them to the lift used in the robbery.
The man’s criminal record includes 11 prior theft convictions. The first two men arrested were from Aubervilliers, northeast of Paris, and were also known for theft-related offenses.
The high-profile theft has drawn global attention and raised questions about security at France’s museums. Louvre Director Jean-Luc Martinez has pledged to strengthen protection measures, including increased police presence and additional security cameras.
Authorities continue to investigate the case and have not ruled out further arrests. The recovered or remaining stolen items have yet to be returned, while prosecutors work to bring all involved to justice.
