The travel and tourism industry is witnessing a major shift with the arrival of Agentic A.I, the next generation of artificial intelligence capable of handling all travel arrangements — from comparing prices to completing bookings and processing payments almost autonomously based on criteria set by the user.
Major travel companies such as Expedia, Google, and Kayak are developing these tools in preparation for launching them widely in the coming years, with expectations that 80 percent of travel companies will adopt them within the next five years.
Despite the growing use of AI among travelers, trust in Agentic A.I remains low. Only a small percentage of users are willing to give it full freedom to make bookings, with privacy concerns and the risk of misinformation (AI hallucinations) being the main obstacles. Users remain hesitant to share their credit card details with a system that could make mistakes or take unjustified actions.
Experts say Agentic A.I is still in an experimental phase that requires strict verification mechanisms to prevent errors and ensure data accuracy, in addition to oversight systems that allow humans to intervene at any moment. They emphasize that the autonomy of these systems should stay limited for now and gradually expand as accuracy and reliability improve.
Travel specialists note that while AI can speed up routine tasks and efficiently gather data, it cannot replace human expertise in assessing quality, personal preferences, and subtle details that technology cannot fully capture.
For this reason, Agentic A.I is expected to remain part of a hybrid model combining technology with human supervision to ensure the best outcomes and avoid mistakes that may be costly or difficult to fix.
