Several American companies are competing to develop advanced technologies aimed at blocking the sun to cool the planet, but experts warn about the potential dangers of these projects to human life.

According to The Washington Post, the field of solar geoengineering has become a private industry, with numerous U.S. companies raising millions of dollars from investors to develop sun-blocking solutions.

These investments have sparked widespread debate, particularly among scientists, regarding the role of private companies in manipulating global climate security.

Some experts argue that profit-driven companies have no place in developing technologies that affect all of humanity, as unintended consequences could severely disrupt global weather patterns and potentially increase pollution and cancer rates.

However, proponents of the idea believe that startups could develop technologies capable of changing the world more rapidly.

In recent years, academics attempted outdoor experiments to block the sun in Sweden and California, but these plans were canceled due to opposition.

Wealthy individuals have supported independent engineers in designing private solutions, such as high-altitude balloons, to reduce the sun’s impact on Earth’s climate.

Yet, most geoengineering experts, including David Keith from the University of Chicago, reject this risky approach and urge scientists to study the potential risks and benefits, leaving decisions about deploying such technologies to governments.

Earlier, U.S. billionaire Elon Musk proposed blocking sunlight using a constellation of satellites to be sent into Earth’s orbit. Experts, however, have warned that this step could lead to an environmental catastrophe.

Other proposals to reflect sunlight away from Earth to reduce temperatures include dispersing reflective particles in the stratosphere, brightening clouds, or launching massive mirrors into space.

Most governments have yet to adopt specific laws regulating solar geoengineering, giving companies a significant degree of leeway in pursuing these projects.
