Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program has launched the Love of Neighbor Initiative, aimed at placing love for communities and individuals at the center of community life, public policy, and academic research.

The Love of Neighbor Initiative seeks to quantify and strengthen the role of love in American society, arguing that interpersonal goodwill is a critical but overlooked driver of population well-being.

The initiative will roll out over the coming year through four main components. First, the program plans to promote healthy expressions of love across a wide range of relationships, including family dynamics, classrooms, and friendships.

Second, researchers will begin nationally representative tracking of how Americans perceive and practice love of neighbor and even love of enemy to observe how attitudes change over time.

A third component aims to push major institutions to recognize love as a social determinant of health, encouraging organizations such as the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association to formally consider its role in shaping mental and physical outcomes.

Finally, the program will support public campaigns that promote universal goodwill, drawing on concepts emphasized by global religious leaders and social thinkers.

The Human Flourishing Program argues that a large body of evidence already links love, expressed through warmth, compassion, forgiveness, and acts of kindness, to improvements in psychological health, relational stability, and long-term well-being.

Yet despite those findings, the subject remains relatively absent from policy debates and academic discourse.

By building what researchers describe as an “epidemiology of love,” Harvard hopes the initiative will guide schools, workplaces, health systems, and community institutions to integrate compassion-driven practices into daily life.

The initiative aims to narrow that divide and position love as a measurable and actionable factor in fostering human flourishing.
