The Ministry of Education and Higher Education, in partnership with the Center for Educational Research and Development, UNICEF, and the European Union, marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and Lebanon’s National Day of Inclusion at the Mövenpick Hotel in Beirut.
The event highlighted progress in inclusive education, featuring student performances, panel discussions with students with disabilities, and short films showcasing developments in inclusive school practices.
Minister Dr. Karamy emphasized: “Inclusion is a right, not a privilege, and we will not accept compromising it. Expanding public inclusive schools to 180 this year ensures every child can learn with dignity.”
The ministry also launched a practical guide for inclusive education, developed with the Center for Educational Research, UNICEF, and the EU. The guide provides a comprehensive framework defining inclusive schools’ vision, standards, and stakeholders’ roles, alongside practical procedures for registration, intervention, and educational assessment.
UNICEF Lebanon representative Marco Luigi Corsi described inclusive education as “a fundamental investment in Lebanon’s future,” while EU Ambassador Sandra Douwal noted that the program has grown from a small pilot in 2018 to a nationwide effort spanning 180 schools.
Since its pilot launch, Lebanon’s inclusive education program has become one of the most impactful long-term investments in the public education sector, ensuring children with disabilities access quality education in supportive environments.
