LEBANON (Enmaeya News) - December 7, 2025
Lebanese-born diplomat Yvonne Abdel Baki has emerged as a serious contender to succeed United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, whose second term is set to end on September 31, 2026, according to diplomatic sources familiar with early discussions surrounding the succession process.
Abdel Baki, who has built a decades-long career across diplomacy, conflict mediation, and international cultural affairs, is being viewed in several UN circles as a candidate with both the experience and geopolitical backing needed for the role.
While the formal selection process has not yet begun, preliminary consultations among member states have already placed her name on the shortlist of potential successors.
Born to Lebanese parents and later naturalized in Ecuador, Abdel Baki previously served as Ecuador’s ambassador to the United States, during which she cultivated strong political ties in Washington.
Her relationship with then–U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly strengthened her standing in American diplomatic circles.
If nominated and approved, Abdel Baki would become the first woman and the first person of Lebanese origin to lead the UN.
