UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (Enmaeya News) - December 14, 2025

The United Arab Emirates will impose a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic products starting January 1, 2026, as part of a nationwide effort to curb plastic pollution and reduce environmental and health risks.

The ban will cover the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic items, expanding earlier measures introduced in 2024 that prohibited plastic bags.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a global challenge, with microplastics detected across ecosystems and supply chains. UAE officials say eliminating unnecessary plastic from daily use is essential to protecting public health and preserving natural resources.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, told Gulf News that the nationwide action builds on the country’s phased approach to reducing waste and pollution.

She emphasized that the policy aligns with the UAE’s broader environmental agenda, which focuses on redesigning systems to minimize waste generation and promote sustainable alternatives.

The government is expected to work with manufacturers, retailers, and consumers during the transition period to ensure compliance and encourage the adoption of reusable and eco-friendly products.

Officials say the 2026 ban represents a major step toward a circular economy and reinforces the UAE’s commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability goals.
