A new study suggests that regularly consuming iron-rich foods, such as red meat, poultry, spinach, lentils, beans, and nuts, could help the body fight off cold and flu viruses more effectively.

Researchers at Columbia University in the United States found that when the body lacks sufficient iron, immune cells in the lungs, responsible for warding off viruses, do not function properly. This weakened response allows cold and flu viruses to persist longer in the body. The findings were published in the Journal of Immunology.

The study highlights the role of T-cells, a key component of the immune system. Scientists discovered that iron deficiency prevents T-cells from producing interferon gamma, a protein essential for mounting a strong antiviral response.

Lead researcher Dr. Thomas J. Connors, assistant professor of pediatrics at Columbia University, said the findings underline the importance of ensuring adequate iron intake ahead of viral infections.

“This research could lead to new dietary interventions to support healthy T-cell function and strengthen protection against infections,” he said.

The research comes as the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) prepares for what is expected to be the worst flu season in nearly a decade. Recent data showed hospital admissions for flu are 50 percent higher than at the same time last year, a surge compounded by low vaccine uptake, with only around half of those eligible having received the flu shot.

Iron deficiency is estimated to affect about eight percent of women and three percent of men in the UK, making the findings particularly relevant for public health recommendations.

Experts advise that incorporating iron-rich foods into daily diets may bolster immune defenses, particularly during the peak of flu season.
