A ceremony was held at the Mar Mikhael headquarters of Lebanon’s Railways and Public Transport Authority to mark the handover of 30 buses donated by the State of Qatar, part of Qatar’s ongoing support for Lebanon and efforts to strengthen public transport as an essential service.
The event was attended by Minister of Public Works and Transport Faez Rassamni, Qatari Ambassador Sheikh Saud bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, and Lebanon’s Railways and Public Transport Authority President Ziad Shia.
Minister Fayez Rassamni thanked Qatar, noting that the donation transforms promises into tangible action. He emphasized that public transport is a fundamental service that restores citizens’ trust, reduces living costs, and strengthens state institutions.
Minister Rassamni added that the 30 buses will immediately serve 11 lines across Lebanon, operating under the first public-private partnership in the sector, with the state providing buses and the private sector handling operations, maintenance, and management.
The minister concluded by stressing the importance of Lebanon’s railway assets and the long-term vision for modernizing public transport, describing this donation as a key step toward rebuilding essential state services and enhancing national resilience.
Qatari Ambassador Sheikh Saud praised the donation as part of the longstanding brotherly relations between the two countries and Qatar’s commitment to supporting Lebanon’s public transport infrastructure amid current challenges.
In his speech, Ziad Shia expressed gratitude to Qatar, emphasizing that the donation reflects the country’s continuous support during Lebanon’s crises.
He noted that the new buses will expand existing routes, reaching underserved areas and providing citizens with safer, more affordable, and comfortable transport.
Shia highlighted that over 7,000 passengers now use public buses daily, underscoring the importance of developing the sector and planning a unified vision for public transport.
He also confirmed ongoing studies to revive Lebanon’s railway system, to link the country regionally and internationally.
