LEBANON - Lebanon inaugurated 36 model libraries in public schools across the country as part of the “Access to All Children” project, funded by Room to Read, aiming to strengthen reading habits among students.
The ceremony, held at Tamouz Hall in Baalbek, was organized by the Lebanese Association for Studies and Training.
Education Minister Dr. Rima Karami emphasized the importance of reading, calling it “the infrastructure for independent learning, critical thinking, comprehension, dialogue, and decision-making."
Minister Karami stated that the project extends beyond creating physical spaces. “We are not opening libraries, we are embedding a clear educational choice: investing in reading as a core entry point for learning and a foundation for comprehensive educational policy,” she said.
She cited PISA 2022 results showing that over 60% of students in low- and middle-income countries fail to meet minimum reading proficiency, affecting performance across subjects and long-term learning.
UNESCO and World Bank reports link weak early reading skills to higher dropout rates and reduced social and economic opportunities.
The ceremony included interactive discussions on strengthening educational partnerships, supporting schools, and ensuring students fully benefit from available resources.
