LEBANON- Minister of Environment Tamara El Zein convened the Governor of Beirut, the Mayor of Beirut, and members of the Municipal Council, alongside representatives of the World Bank, the European Union, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the aim of supporting the Municipality of Beirut in reaching a sustainable solution for managing the capital’s waste.
This step comes in implementation of Law No. 80/2018, which assigns local authorities the responsibility of preparing solid waste management plans within their respective jurisdictions.
The participants agreed to hold a technical meeting bringing together the Municipality of Beirut and specialized experts to develop a comprehensive waste management plan for the city in the short, medium, and long term.
The plan is set to be included among the priorities of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, expected to be appointed soon, particularly in terms of follow-up and implementation.
Discussions also addressed mechanisms for applying the cost recovery law in a way that enhances the sustainability of the sector and improves the services provided to citizens
