LEBANON – Lebanon’s Minister of Tourism, Laura Lahoud, took part in the World Governments Summit in Dubai as a member of the Lebanese delegation headed by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Speaking during a panel titled “The Role of Emerging Destinations in Redefining the Global Travel Map,” Minister Lahoud stressed that Lebanon’s tourism sector remains a key pillar of the national economy despite ongoing challenges.
She highlighted the resilience of the Lebanese people and underscored the country’s diverse tourism assets, including cultural, eco, sports, and medical tourism.
Minister Lahoud also emphasized the vital role of the Lebanese diaspora in driving economic activity and acting as global ambassadors for their country.
She noted that tourism trends have evolved, with travelers increasingly seeking authenticity and meaningful experiences, an area where Lebanon has a strong competitive edge.
Minister Lahoud cited initiatives such as culinary tourism, heritage guesthouses, and the Lebanon Mountain Trail as examples of how tourism revenues can be distributed more equitably across local communities beyond Beirut.
On institutional reform, Minister Lahoud said the launch of Lebanon’s official tourism digital portal and the automation of tourism business licensing represent strategic decisions.
Addressing Lebanon’s economic and security challenges, Minister Lahoud said the tourism sector has demonstrated exceptional resilience, contributing between 20 and 30% of GDP.
She added that the resumption of travel from Gulf countries, particularly the United Arab Emirates, had an immediate positive impact on restoring confidence in the Lebanese economy, calling for stronger regional cooperation to facilitate mobility and rebuild trust.
She concluded by describing tourism as “a sector of hope,” a key driver of job creation for youth and women, and a safeguard of Lebanon’s cultural and national identity.
