BEIRUT – On February 10, 2026, Ambassador Kenji Yokota of Japan and Mr. Paolo Fontani, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut, signed a new agreement at the Japanese Embassy in Lebanon to launch the second phase of the Japan-UNESCO Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Program.

The initiative aims to support children and teachers affected by crises across Lebanon.

The project, titled “Strengthening Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being of Children in Crisis-Affected Lebanon,”focuses on fostering continued participation in education and promoting inclusive, supportive learning environments.

The second phase incorporates Greening Education activities, reflecting Japan’s engagement in the global Greening Education Partnership and building on its international leadership in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Through hands-on activities, students will improve psychosocial health, develop positive coping strategies, strengthen emotional resilience, and learn about civic engagement for a sustainable environment.

The program also supports the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) in addressing the psychosocial impact of prolonged crises on learners while advancing sustainable educational approaches aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This partnership underscores Japan and UNESCO’s shared commitment to combining mental health support, quality education, and sustainability initiatives to help Lebanon’s children thrive despite ongoing challenges.
