BEIRUT - A reform plan aimed at tackling inflation and rebuilding Lebanon’s economic foundations was presented Wednesday by Economy Minister Amer Bisat to Parliament’s Economy, Trade, Industry, and Planning Committee.
The plan, which Minister Bisat described as a roadmap for Lebanon’s economic future, starts “below zero,” according to Committee Chairman MP Farid Boustani, reflecting the depth of the country’s financial and structural crisis.
The minister outlined priorities focused primarily on curbing inflation, particularly the rise in consumer goods prices that directly affect citizens’ daily lives.
Following the presentation, the committee granted itself two weeks to examine the proposal in detail and prepare further questions ahead of the next session.
Discussions centered on strengthening cooperation between legislative and executive authorities, advancing digital transformation within the economic sector, and clarifying the role of investment institutions and development projects.
For his part, Minister Bisat expressed optimism about Lebanon’s economic prospects, saying structural reforms could help increase national output.
However, he acknowledged that inflation remains a significant challenge, particularly amid fluctuations in the US dollar and their impact on the Lebanese pound.
The minister emphasized the importance of consumer protection and called for the approval of legislation to increase fines and strengthen market oversight.
He also urged the activation of the Competition Council and the appointment of the Competition Commission to ensure a transparent and competitive economic environment.
