LEBANON – The Fishermen’s Committee, formed under the Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and Syndicates, held its second meeting in what it described as a “pivotal” step to safeguard Lebanon’s maritime identity.
The meeting brought together field expertise from fishermen and academic specialists from the Faculty of Agriculture at the Lebanese University, along with representatives of the National Federation of Cooperative Associations. Participants thoroughly reviewed the draft law on aquatic hunting and aquaculture, unanimously approving the final amended version.
The proposed amendments are built on two key pillars: securing fishermen’s social and economic rights and livelihood, and introducing science-based regulations to preserve marine resources for future generations.
According to the statement, the proposals will be formally submitted to Members of Parliament and to the Ministries of Agriculture and Public Works and Transport as a roadmap toward adopting a modern law that protects fishermen’s dignity and Lebanon’s marine environment.
