BEIRUT - The Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) and the Beirut Port Authority have signed cooperation agreements to advance several infrastructure projects, including a proposed freight railway linking Beirut Port to the Lebanese-Syrian border.

The agreement allows feasibility and technical studies to begin for the development of a rail line extending from Beirut Port to Masnaa, with potential future expansion into Syria.

The project aims to improve cargo transportation efficiency, reduce road congestion, and strengthen regional trade connectivity.

Part of the freight arriving at Beirut Port is headed to the Bekaa region. In response, authorities have proposed establishing a dry port in the Bekaa Valley to function as an inland cargo terminal.

The facility would receive freight transported by train, store and distribute goods, and extend the operational capacity of the port beyond its coastal location.

However, implementation will depend on detailed engineering studies, financing arrangements, and coordination with relevant stakeholders.
