WORLD – Dozens of countries, including the United States and China, called for “safe, strong, and trustworthy” AI in a joint statement during the AI summit in India.

The statement, signed by 86 countries and two international organizations, said that “promoting safe and trustworthy AI is essential to build confidence and provide the greatest social and economic benefits.”

The text does not include any binding commitments or enforceable actions, but it prioritizes voluntary initiatives, especially sharing AI research capabilities internationally.

The announcement, after a five-day summit, added: “AI’s full potential can only be realized when all of humanity shares its benefits.”

Computer science researcher Stuart Russell told AFP that “the commitments are not completely meaningless. What matters is that there are pledges.”

He added: “I hope all countries follow these agreements to create legal commitments that protect their people, so AI can develop and be used without unacceptable risks.”

Regarding jobs, the statement stressed the importance of reskilling programs “to help workers prepare for an AI-driven future economy.”

It also highlighted the need for “energy-efficient AI systems,” given the large amounts of electricity and water needed to run and cool AI servers.

Delegations from around the world met in India’s capital to discuss especially ways to regulate AI safely.
