LEBANON— Lebanon is seeking to join the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), as officials push to restore the country’s historic role as a Mediterranean shipping hub linking regional markets to Europe.
A map presented by French presidential envoy Gérard Mestrallet outlines a corridor stretching from India to the Middle East and Europe.
Egypt and Cyprus have joined the initiative. Lebanese officials say the country meets the logistical and geographic criteria for inclusion and has formally expressed interest.
During a recent visit, Mestrallet toured key infrastructure sites, including the Port of Beirut and the Port of Tripoli, where French shipping company CMA CGM operates.
He also held meetings with senior Lebanese officials, who described the corridor as a strategic opportunity to boost trade flows and generate economic returns.
French engagement reflects Paris’ longstanding ties with Lebanon and its interest in maintaining influence during a critical phase for the country’s economic recovery.
President Joseph Aoun has tasked the public works minister with coordinating with the French side as discussions advance.
