LEBANON — An initiative by the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) at the Ministry of Public Health is gaining renewed relevance amid the ongoing conflict, as the “Step by Step” program expands access to psychological support across the country.

Developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization in Lebanon, the program is part of broader efforts to address rising mental health challenges nationwide.

"Step by Step" is a free and confidential psychological support program designed for individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or difficult emotions.

The program is accessible through a mobile application or website and provides structured psychological support over five weeks. Participants receive weekly guidance and can also connect with trained supporters through scheduled phone calls.

Why This Matters

Research has consistently shown that levels of anxiety and depression tend to rise in Lebanon during periods of conflict and instability. At the same time, many people face barriers to accessing mental health services, particularly cost and transportation.

The "Step by Step" program helps address these barriers by offering free, remote support that can be accessed entirely through a smartphone or computer with a Wi-Fi connection.

This allows individuals to participate in the full five-week program without needing to travel to a clinic or pay service fees.

How the Program Works

The program begins with an initial mental health assessment, which includes questions related to symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Based on this assessment, participants are guided through a structured series of tools and exercises aimed at improving emotional well-being.

These include breathing and relaxation exercises, mood tracking, guided journaling, and goal setting to encourage re-engagement with social activities and daily routines.

In addition to the self-guided modules, participants have the option to speak with trained supporters during a weekly 15-minute phone call, allowing them to discuss their progress and receive additional encouragement throughout the program.
