BEIRUT — Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rassamni, chaired an expanded meeting on Friday with key transport officials and union representatives to address the impact of rising global oil prices on local transportation fares.
The meeting brought together Director General of Land and Maritime Transport Dr. Ahmad Tamer, Head of Land Transport Unions Bassam Tlais, Head of the Land Transport Authority Tony Assaf, and representatives of relevant transport syndicates.
Discussions focused on the continued rise in fuel prices and its direct effects on operating costs across Lebanon’s transport sector, as global markets remain volatile.
Following discussions, participants agreed to revise transport fares to reflect the increase in fuel prices. The adjustment aims to achieve a balance between safeguarding drivers’ rights and maintaining affordability for citizens, whose purchasing power has been severely strained.
Minister Rassamni is expected to issue an official decision outlining the new, temporary fare structure once fuel markets stabilize.
In line with the minister’s directives, the revised fare framework will also apply to public transport services at the same rate as private transport, in an effort to unify pricing policies across the sector.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to hold a follow-up session in one month to assess compliance with the new fares and make adjustments if necessary, ensuring a balanced outcome for all stakeholders.
