WORLD - When nearly two million people gathered on Copacabana Beach to watch Shakira perform for free on May 2, 2026, the event looked like a massive cultural celebration.
But for Rio de Janeiro, the concert was also part of a calculated economic strategy.
What Happened?
Shakira held a free mega-concert on Copacabana Beach, attracting around two million attendees and becoming one of the largest concerts ever organized globally.
The show was part of the city initiative “Todo Mundo no Rio,” a long-term plan that uses large-scale entertainment events to attract tourists, boost spending, and strengthen Rio’s international image.
The city intends to continue this model every year until at least 2028.
Why Is Rio Doing This?
May is traditionally considered a slower tourism season in Rio, falling between Carnival celebrations and the June festivities.
Instead of allowing tourism activity to decline, city authorities are using global entertainment events to keep hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and shops active during this quieter period.
In simple terms, Rio is treating concerts as an economic investment, not just entertainment.
How Much Money Could the Concert Generate?
According to Rio’s city council and Riotur, the municipal tourism agency, Shakira’s concert could inject nearly 777 million Brazilian reais, around €132 million, into the local economy.
Officials also estimated that the financial return could reach nearly 40 times the amount of public investment spent on organizing the event.
The economic activity came from:
• Hotel bookings
• Restaurant spending
• Transportation services
• Retail shopping
• Tourism-related activities
Did the Strategy Work?
The numbers suggest it did.
Authorities estimated that around 310,000 domestic and international tourists traveled to Rio for the concert.
Accommodation platforms also reported a significant increase in bookings from across Brazil, other Latin American countries, and European cities such as Paris and London.
Previous concerts under the same strategy also produced strong tourism results:
• Tourism activity in May 2024 increased by 34% compared to 2023
• In 2025, tourism reportedly surged by more than 90% compared to the same reference year
Which Artists Were Part of the Strategy?
Before Shakira’s 2026 performance, the city had already organized similar mega-events featuring:
• Madonna in 2024
• Lady Gaga in 2025
The goal is to establish Rio as a recurring global entertainment hub capable of attracting millions of visitors annually.
Why Does This Matter?
Rio’s model highlights how cities are increasingly using culture and entertainment as economic tools.
Instead of relying only on traditional tourism campaigns, cities can create global events that generate international attention, attract visitors, stimulate local businesses, and strengthen urban branding at the same time.
For Rio, the free concert was not only a music event, it was also part of a broader strategy to turn entertainment into economic growth.
