LEBANON – Minister of Environment Dr. Tamara El Zein launched a new initiative from the city of Saida aimed at improving environmental conditions in displacement shelters, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the European Union.
The initiative includes the distribution of 500 waste containers across more than 25 shelters hosting approximately 10,000 displaced persons. It is being coordinated with South Governor Mansour Daou and will be implemented by the Mouwasat Association in cooperation with the Municipality of Saida.
The project also includes awareness-raising programs on waste management and source segregation, as part of an integrated model designed to strengthen environmental management in shelters and improve the health and living conditions of displaced populations.
This initiative marks the first phase of a broader plan that will later expand to additional regions, in line with the Ministry of Environment’s commitment to promoting sustainable environmental response and improving waste management amid ongoing humanitarian challenges.
