Lebanon Boosts Agricultural Resilience Through 1.5 Million Seedling Project
The project aims to support the most vulnerable farmers and enhance local agricultural production, contributing to food security in Lebanon.
LEBANON – In a new step aimed at strengthening food security and supporting the resilience of Lebanon’s agricultural sector, the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the German government through the KfW Development Bank, has launched a project to produce and distribute one and a half million diverse vegetable seedlings under the campaign “Together We Secure Food Security”.
The project comes at a time when Lebanon’s agricultural sector is facing increasing challenges due to economic conditions and pressures that have affected farmers’ ability to continue production. It aims to provide direct support to farming households and the most vulnerable farmers across various regions of Lebanon by supplying high-quality vegetable seedlings that help increase local production and strengthen food security.
The project is considered one of the key components of the agricultural response and recovery plan implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, as it contributes to revitalizing the agricultural production cycle and providing essential inputs to affected farmers, thereby enhancing their ability to continue working their lands and secure sustainable income for their families.
It also aims to expand cultivated vegetable areas across different regions of Lebanon, encourage local production, reduce reliance on imports, and contribute to market stability by ensuring the availability of agricultural products to consumers at more competitive prices.
The Ministry of Agriculture affirmed that this initiative is part of national efforts to enhance the agricultural sector’s capacity to face current challenges, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and support the stability of rural communities, which represent a fundamental pillar of food security and sustainable development in Lebanon.
The project reflects the importance of the partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture, UNDP, and the German government in supporting Lebanon’s agricultural sector through practical initiatives that respond to farmers’ needs and help them maintain and enhance their production, ensuring the continuity of agricultural activity and achieving positive economic and social outcomes.
It is expected that the distribution of 1.5 million vegetable seedlings will contribute to boosting agricultural production in the coming seasons and increasing benefits for farmers across all Lebanese governorates, supporting efforts toward more sustainable food security and greater resilience in the face of future crises.
