AMERICA - The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is set to open on September 8 in New York, bringing nearly 200 member states together as wars, geopolitical tensions and pressure on the international system dominate the global agenda.
The new session will officially open on September 8 at 3 p.m. New York time, with Bangladeshi diplomat Khalilur Rahman serving as president of the General Assembly. The session will run until September 7, 2027, under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
The opening comes ahead of the main high-level week, when heads of state and government are expected to descend on New York for the annual General Debate from September 22 to 28.
Wars and Diplomatic Tensions Take Centre Stage
The General Assembly will convene against a backdrop of multiple conflicts and growing geopolitical divisions, placing renewed pressure on world leaders to find diplomatic solutions.
The United States is expected to attract particular attention, with President Donald Trump likely to feature prominently during the high-level meetings. His administration's foreign policy, including its approach to Iran and the United Nations, is expected to influence discussions throughout the week.
The gathering will also provide an opportunity for leaders to hold bilateral meetings and pursue diplomacy outside the formal General Assembly proceedings.
Ukraine will also remain high on the agenda as Kyiv and its Western allies seek continued international support and pressure on Russia over its ongoing war.
Key Meetings on Climate, Development and Health
Beyond geopolitical crises, the 81st session will feature several high-level meetings addressing global development and humanitarian challenges.
A high-level meeting on climate action and a just transition is scheduled for September 23, while a meeting addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise will take place on September 24.
The agenda will also include a high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response on September 25. Another meeting on September 28 will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
The UN has said the session will seek to strengthen global cooperation, advance the Sustainable Development Goals and promote collective action on peace, dignity and equality.
Lebanon to Address the General Assembly
Lebanon is scheduled to take the floor during the General Debate on Friday, September 25, alongside countries including Iraq, Croatia, Ethiopia, Malta and Monaco.
The General Debate will begin on September 22 and continue through September 26 before concluding on September 28. The UN's provisional schedule places Lebanon's address in the morning session on September 25.
UN Secretary-General Race Adds Another Layer
The session will also provide an important backdrop for the eventual selection of the UN's next secretary-general.
Candidates are expected to use meetings and side events in New York to build support, particularly among the five permanent members of the Security Council: the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France.
With the international system facing pressure over conflicts, climate change, development and global cooperation, the new General Assembly session is expected to test the UN's ability to deliver on its central role as a forum for multilateral diplomacy.
