LEBANON - On the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, observed today, September 9, Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Rima Karami issued a message stressing that "education is not a target in war and must not be its price".
Karami emphasized that "protecting schools, students, and teachers, and ensuring safe access to education and the continuity of learning, is not the responsibility of the Ministry of Education alone, but a responsibility shared by the state and the international community".
She called for "respect for international law and accountability for those responsible for violations targeting educational institutions, learners, and education personnel".
Karami also stressed that “continuity of education during times of crisis is not a luxury, but part of protecting the child himself".
She noted that a school’s location may change, classrooms may be relocated, and children may be forced to flee their homes, "but a child’s right to education must not change".
She concluded by emphasizing that "protecting education does not mean protecting a building alone, but protecting children, teachers, and society, as well as its ability to recover and build the future once the war is over".
