LEBANON — Around 30 public schools across Lebanon closed their doors as the new academic year began on Sept. 15, due to insufficient student enrollment to remain operational, according to L’Orient Today.
The closures come as Lebanon’s public education sector continues to face the impact of seven years of economic and financial crisis, in addition to two devastating wars with Israel since 2023.
The affected schools include primary, middle and secondary schools. Some had more teachers than students, while others had only two or three pupils, even as operating costs continued to rise amid the state’s limited financial resources.
The closure of these schools highlights the growing pressures facing Lebanon’s public education sector, as student numbers decline in some areas and the ongoing financial crisis continues to affect the state’s ability to fund the sector.
