World Water Day 2025 was commemorated through a national event in Beirut celebrating the 50th anniversary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP). Organized in collaboration with UNESCO Beirut, CNRS-L, and Saint Joseph University, the event centered on the urgent need to protect Lebanon’s glaciers—critical freshwater reserves that are rapidly vanishing due to climate change.
The event featured presentations from researchers, policymakers, and youth advocates on water security and hydrological resilience. Discussions explored:
The impact of climate change on Lebanon’s high-altitude snowcaps and glacial reserves
The role of hydro-diplomacy in fostering regional cooperation over transboundary water resources
The importance of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus in designing integrated resource policies
By combining science with policy and public engagement, the event aimed to build a shared understanding of Lebanon’s water challenges and promote a forward-looking, collaborative approach to sustainable water governance..
