Minister of Education Dr. Rima Karami and PM Nawaf Salam's wife, Mrs. Sahar Baasiry Salam, announced at a press conference today an initiative by Middle East Airlines (MEA) to support 80 public schools, as part of the National Campaign to Support Public Schools.
The conference was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education, representatives of international organizations, education specialists, and members of the press.
Minister Karami described the initiative as a strategic partnership between the public and private sectors, aligned with the Ministry’s broader reform vision.
She explained that the supported schools were selected based on internationally recognized criteria, including governance, engagement with local communities, learning environment quality, and readiness to implement development projects.
According to Minister Karami, each school is eligible to receive up to $10,000 to implement clearly defined and pre-approved improvement plans, including infrastructure upgrades, learning environment enhancements, and digital education initiatives. The Ministry will oversee the disbursement of funds and monitor implementation through detailed reporting mechanisms.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Baassiri Salam said the MEA contribution marked the official launch of the national campaign, stressing that public schools remain a cornerstone of social stability and equal opportunity in Lebanon.
She confirmed that the 80 schools selected fall within a broader list of 160 schools identified by the Ministry of Education as being in urgent need of support.
MEA first announced the initiative during the airline's 80th anniversary commencement. The program includes a major contribution from Middle East Airlines (MEA), which has pledged $800,000 to support 80 public schools across Lebanon.
The initiative was presented as a long-term effort to rebuild confidence in public education, restore its role in Lebanese society, and ensure that students have access to a high-quality learning environment.
