LEBANON - The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has launched an awareness campaign ahead of the winter season, urging residents to avoid dumping waste on roads and around rainwater drainage systems.
The campaign comes alongside cleaning, maintenance and debris-removal works being carried out by the ministry within areas under its responsibility, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
Keeping Drains Clear
The ministry said the campaign is based on a simple message: cleaning storm drains is not enough if waste is subsequently thrown back into them.
During rainfall, waste left on roads or near drainage points can be swept into drains, potentially obstructing water flow and contributing to water accumulation on roads, the ministry said.
The campaign therefore aims to encourage residents to help protect drainage infrastructure by avoiding the disposal of waste on roads and in areas surrounding drainage channels.
Shared Responsibility
The ministry described the protection of completed maintenance and cleaning works as a shared responsibility involving public authorities, relevant entities and citizens.
It said each party has a role to play in reducing the risk of blocked drainage systems during the winter, while emphasizing that citizens can contribute through a basic measure: not throwing waste onto roads.
The ministry said the campaign seeks to reinforce public awareness of the connection between waste disposal and the effectiveness of rainwater drainage systems, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Winter Awareness Message
As part of the campaign, the ministry is addressing residents with the slogan: “Let’s not throw our achievements out the window.”
The message refers to efforts made during the previous winter season and calls on residents to prevent waste from undermining those efforts during the coming winter.
The campaign concludes with a direct appeal to the public: “Don’t throw garbage so you don’t block the drains.”
The ministry’s campaign coincides with preparations for the winter season, when rainfall can place additional pressure on road drainage infrastructure and increase the need for clear and functioning water channels.
